The Kikuyu

The kikuyu family unit was called "nyumba". A "mucii" was made up of several related "nyumba". A mucii was also a subgroup "mbari" which made up the nine clans. The clans were arguably ten but in Kikuyu culture, people, livestock and children are not fully counted as this would bring bad lack.

The Kikuyu were originally farmers. As the forefathers came around the slopes of Mt. Kenya, they were pleased with settling in the fertile highlands. Soon, they over threw the communities that lived there and claimed the land as there own. They would grow crops such as bananas, sugarcane, arum lily, yams, beans, millet, maize, black beans and a variety of vegetables. They would sell some of the produce to neighboring communities in exchange and get arrowheads, spears and swords. The women would walk for days to a popular market place where they would barter the goods they had. A man who the whole community trusted would accompany the women to the market place and help them get the best deals for their goods. He was also in charge of the goods" security.
