The Kaluga Oblast in Russia"s Central Province is well known for its exquisite monasteries and churches, and the Optina Pustyn Monastery is thought to be one of the best. It is most famous for its connection to the Russian startsky movement of the 18th century, when elderly monks were greatly revered for their supposed healing powers, and has also been visited by such Russian literary greats as Nikolai Gogol and Leo Tolstoy.What is probably the sole surviving Kostroma Moose Farm exists near the small town of Sumarokovo in the Central Province"s Kostroma Oblast. Tours of the farm are available and can be arranged through the Kostroma Bureau of Tourism. Visitors to the farm can see how the moose are milked and also how antler velvet is harvested. Visitors are not, however, allowed to wander the farm unaccompanied as the moose sometimes mistake them for predators.
The Central Province"s Moscow Oblast region is home to the town of Monino where tourists can find the Central Air Force Museum, which is one of the largest aviation museums in the world. Advance permission is usually required for foreign tourists to visit the museum but, if granted, this would be the highlight of anyone"s Tours Russia holiday. The museum"s many aircraft are stored in two hangars with a combined space of 5,500sq.m. and a 20 acre open-air aircraft parking lot.
