It is owned and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts segment of the Walt Disney Company. It opened on October 1, 1971, with the Magic Kingdom theme park and has since added Epcot in 1982, Disney"s Hollywood Studios in 1989, and Disney"s Animal Kingdom in 1998. Each theme park is represented by an iconic structure: the Cinderella Castle for Magic Kingdom, the Spaceship Earth for Epcot, the SorcererтЂ™s Hat for DisneyтЂ™s Hollywood Studios, and the Tree of Life for DisneyтЂ™s Animal Kingdom.
It also contains two water parks, twenty-four themed hotels, and numerous shopping, dining, entertainment, and recreation venues. Examples of the various recreation venues are the five golf courses inside the WDW property. The four 18-hole golf courses include the Magnolia, the Palm, Lake Buena Vista, and Osprey Ridge. There is also a nine-hole walking course called Oak Trail, designed for young golfers.
